When Mentorship Becomes a Space for Leadership Growth
What happens when mentorship moves beyond advice and becomes a space for reflection, ownership, and real leadership growth?
This question was at the heart of our recent SWANRise session, where we had the privilege of hearing from Isabelle Valentin and Soultana Ellinidou as they shared their journeys from the 2025 cohort.
Through their perspectives as mentor and mentee, one message came through strongly: mentorship is not about having all the answers.
It is about creating trust. Asking better questions. Challenging perspectives. And supporting each other’s growth through action, reflection, and intentional conversations.
During the discussion, several powerful reminders emerged.
First, mentees play an active role in shaping the mentoring relationship. Preparation, intention, and ownership are essential. A meaningful mentoring journey does not happen by chance. It is built through clarity, consistency, and the willingness to reflect on one’s own goals and areas of growth.
Second, mentors are not there to solve everything. Their role is often to help explore the “how” and the “why”, to open new perspectives, and to create a safe space where the mentee can think more deeply and move forward with confidence.
The conversation also reminded us that leadership growth often begins when we move beyond technical expertise. Communication, visibility, confidence, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate uncertainty are all part of the leadership journey.
One of the most meaningful messages was that trust and momentum are built between sessions, not only during them. What happens after each conversation matters just as much as the conversation itself.
A special moment was hearing how mentorship can help transform uncertainty into clarity and confidence. But also how mentoring is never one-directional. It is a two-way learning experience, where both mentor and mentee grow through the exchange.
Thank you to Isabelle and Soultana for their authenticity, generosity, and practical insights shared with the new SWANRise 2026 cohort.
And thank you to all mentors and mentees who continue proving that leadership development happens through conversation, community, and intentional support.
The journey continues on 29 June 2026 with our next SWANRise session on Leadership Stories and the launch of a reflective 360° feedback exercise.
A special thank you also goes to Eutelsat, whose support as sponsor helped make this SWANRise journey possible and contributed to creating a meaningful space for leadership development across the space sector.
