Why I Truly Believe in Gender Diversity and Why You Should Too
By Sandrine Roux – Member of the Space Women Alliance, space enthusiast, and firm believer that equity is sexy.
Let’s be real: when I first heard about SWAN, I thought, “Finally, a space alliance where I can be myself without constantly having to prove I belong.”
Spoiler: I took my seat at the table; as a Women’s Career Promotion Lead volunteer; and maybe added a little stardust to it. And while I was at it, I brought along a belief that fuels everything I do: gender diversity isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s the launchpad.
🚀 Space isn’t just for silver-suited dudes anymore
We grew up with images of astronauts or pilots that were 90% testosterone and 10% oxygen (Top Gun, anyone? 😉). But let’s be honest: the universe doesn’t care about gender, glass ceilings (except the ones we build for ourselves), or stereotypes. It cares about bold ideas, collaboration, and pushing boundaries.
And none of that happens in a room full of clones.
What I love about SWAN is that it’s not about “adding women to the table”, it’s about reshaping the whole table so everyone belongs, speaks up, and shines.
And that means we absolutely, undeniably need men in the room too.
🤝 Men in SWAN? Oh yes, one hundred percent 💯
Because let’s be clear: this movement isn’t a “girls-only club.”
It’s not revenge.
It’s not a phase.
It’s a collective mission. And like any successful space mission, we need a full, diverse crew to make it happen.
Men have a vital role to play : as allies, mentors, co-leaders, teammates, listeners, and question-askers. Many already are. And frankly, true progress can’t happen without them.
A more balanced world doesn’t just benefit women, it lifts everyone.
🌱 Equity isn’t cosmetic. It’s rocket fuel.
It’s what powers innovation, trust, empathy, and resilience.
Teams with real diversity, gender, race, background, experience, don’t just look better. They think better, solve better, and thrive longer.
And personally? I want to be in a space (literally and metaphorically) where I don’t have to choose between being competent and being myself.
Where people lift each other up.
Where everyone’s voice matters.
That’s the space future I believe in. And we’re building it together.
💫 So, what’s the takeaway?
We need all voices to write the next chapter of the space story.
All genders. All perspectives. All dreamers and doers.
So, if you’re reading this, whether you’re a woman, a man, non-binary, or just a curious human looking up at the stars, you belong here.
And if you’re still not sure, come grab a (virtual) coffee with us.
You’ll see: we take our mission seriously, but never our dress code. 😉

We may not be on Mars yet, but we’re already building a better planet right here.
